La Piana

Located in Castelvetro di Modena, in the heart of the first Modenese hills, La Piana Winery has its roots in a strong and deep-rooted family farming tradition.

The winery’s history dates back to 1951, when Cesare Gianaroli began working and vinifying the grapes from his own vineyard, nestled in the enchanting hills of the Lambrusco Grasparossa di Castelvetro DOP.

La Piana

The reins were handed down to his son Graziano, who sadly passed away suddenly in 1992. At just 14 years old, Mirco began working among the vines, gradually renewing the winery with cutting-edge technologies, transforming the vineyards, and achieving excellent results with wines appreciated by a clientele passionate about organic products.

La Piana Winery extends over just 8 hectares of vineyard between Castelvetro and Vignola, with a small production of 60,000 bottles across 9 labels.

Emilia Romagna

The history of vine and wine in Emilia-Romagna dates back to the pre-Roman era and is linked to its most famous grape, Lambrusco. The spread of wine produced with the same grape, renowned worldwide, has also generated the belief that only ordinary wines are produced here, a misconception debunked by many examples of high quality found in the area.
At the end of the 1800s, the arrival of phylloxera marked a halt in Emilian viticulture, except in the Po Delta area, which was spared from the parasite invasion and still has many ungrafted vines.

The region is divided into two distinct geographical and cultural areas: Emilia, in the western part, and Romagna, in the eastern part. Even the predominantly cultivated grape varieties are different: in the east, barbera, croatina, malvasia di Candia, and ortrugo prevail, while in the center there are various varieties of Lambrusco, up to pignoletto in the Bolognese area, and sangiovese, trebbiano romagnolo, pagadebit, and albana in the hilly area towards the sea.

The pedoclimatic characteristics of the territory vary depending on altitude and proximity to the sea, giving rise to different wine zones, with a gradually milder climate as one approaches the Romagnola Riviera.

Castelvetro di Modena

The province of Modena covers the territory between the Panaro and Secchia rivers, from the Apennines to the Po. Its long history has always been based on agriculture and local traditional values. Here, typical products are not only economic resources but also signs of the bond between people and their land.

The Castelvetro Lambrusco DOC is one of the most famous wines produced in the area. A ruby red sparkling wine that undoubtedly reflects the virtues of an entire territory: honest, energetic, and fun, informal, versatile, engaging but never demanding.

The soil of the Modena hills has formed as a consequence of the flooding of the two rivers and is mainly loose and sandy, permeable, and rich in potassium. In addition to Lambrusco, other wines with a designation of origin are produced in Castelvetro, including Gutturnio, Colli Bolognesi, and Pignoletto. The area is also famous for its gastronomic products such as cold cuts, cheeses, and cherries.

Here, typical products are not only economic resources but also symbols of the bond between people and their land.

Recommended pairings and dishes

Matching by concordance

The light body and intense aromas call for pairings by analogy—just like its fruity and floral notes. Best enjoyed with delicate and aromatic dishes such as seafood salads, carpaccios, or recipes featuring fresh herbs and citrus.

Matching by contrast

The balanced effervescence and freshness pleasantly contrast the richness of cured meats and fried foods, while the savory character helps balance dishes with briny or richer components such as seafood and fish-based first courses.

It pairs well with

Cured meats and cold cuts, Milanese-style cutlet, seafood, fish-based pasta dishes, and sushi; also excellent with pasta courses in general. Ideal for aperitifs and convivial moments thanks to its ability to cleanse the palate from richer or more flavorful dishes.

Seafood Risotto

Mussels, clams, squid, shrimp... A classic dish, perfect for special occasions and all seasons, relatively easy to prepare, delicate, of medium structure, and very elegant.

Lasagna with Ragù

Lasagna is a classic dish of Italian cuisine composed of layers of pasta, béchamel sauce, ragù, and cheese, usually Parmesan or mozzarella. When prepared with care, lasagna presents a balance between the softness of the pasta, the creaminess of the béchamel, and the richness of the ragù. This dish is a comforting delight, suitable for all seasons and perfect for sharing with family and friends.
