Mendoza

Mendoza is both the name of the capital of the eponymous province and the main wine region of Argentina, located at the western end of the country, from which over 80% of the national wine production originates. The region now encompasses a wide geographical area characterized by diverse terrains and mesoclimates. It is believed that the first grapevines from Spain were planted in the sixteenth century, but modern viticulture began in the 1990s.

The Mendoza region features a continental climate with well-defined seasons. Summers are hot and sunny, but at higher altitudes, temperatures are not extreme, and the main threat to crops is frequent spring hailstorms. In summer, vineyards are irrigated with water from the Andes, which is available in sufficient quantities thanks to rivers, glaciers, and wells.

Vineyards in the Mendoza region are located at an average altitude of 600-1100 meters above sea level, and the region can be divided into the following areas:

- Along the gentle slopes in the north, vineyards are situated on sandy soils at lower altitudes. Here, mainly white wines are produced from varieties such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Chenin Blanc, Ugni Blanc, and Torrontés, as well as reds from Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Bonarda, and Malbec.
- To the east lie the largest vineyard areas, as well as the greatest number of wineries. In this area, characterized by profoundly different climates and terrains, all the varieties grown in Argentina are cultivated.
- The heart of Mendoza's wine production lies in the central region, with denominations such as Luján de Cuyo and Maipú, where Malbec reigns supreme.
- Finally, in the Uco Valley, one finds vineyards situated at the highest altitudes. Here, both elegant reds and fresh white wines are produced.

Due to the variety of climates and grape varieties, Mendoza produces many wines of all categories, but the region owes its fame to Malbec, a full-bodied and intense wine appreciated for its ripe berry fruit, full body, and delicate acidity. The quality system does not impose rigid standards; quality aspects are essentially left to individual producers. However, there are labeling regulations: if the grape variety is listed on the label, it must account for at least 80% of the wine.

Valle de Uco

The Valle de Uco, located in the province of Mendoza, Argentina, has emerged as one of the country's most promising wine regions. Situated between 900 and 1700 meters above sea level at the foot of the majestic Andes, this valley is characterized by a cool but sunny climate, with intense thermal variations that favor the optimal ripening of the grapes.

Before the 1990s, the Valle de Uco did not host any vineyards, but today it is the beating heart of Argentine winemaking, known for producing high-quality wines. The region is watered by the Tunuyán and Las Tunas rivers and features a variety of soils, composed of alluvial deposits and complex terrains that contribute to its wine biodiversity.

The semi-desert climate, with annual precipitation limited to about 200 mm, allows for precise irrigation control, essential for high-precision viticulture. The pure glacier water, combined with intense solar exposure, imparts freshness and elegance to the wines. Valle de Uco is renowned for its Malbecs, but also for other varieties like Chardonnay and Cabernet Sauvignon, which thrive here due to the unique environmental conditions.

The region has gained international recognition, reflecting its growing prestige. Local vintners, many of whom are descendants of Italian immigrants, blend tradition with modern innovations, creating wines that express a strong sense of place and remarkable quality. With a generation of passionate and talented producers, Valle de Uco today represents the future of Argentine enology, with wines that not only reflect their origin but also the skill of those who produce them.

A mountainous land that continually surprises.
