Production and refinement

Barbera 100%, from vineyards facing southeast within the "Mariano" cru in the municipality of San Marzano Oliveto, carefully thinned during the summer months. Manual harvest, late harvest.

The winemaking process, accompanied by a long maceration on the skins, is followed by aging for 36 months in fine French oak barrels, allowing the wine to reach full maturation and develop tertiary aromas. Afterward, the wine continues to age for another 12 months in the bottle.

Franco Mondo

In the heart of the Astigiano region, in the picturesque village of San Marzano Oliveto, lies the Franco Mondo winery, a true gem run by the Mondo family for generations. Their passion for viticulture is reflected in the careful management of their vineyards, which cover about 11 hectares of land. Nearly 60% of the area is dedicated to Barbera, the symbol of the region, but the family also cultivates other indigenous and international varieties, including Moscato Bianco, Dolcetto, Cortese, Chardonnay, Favorita, and Cabernet Sauvignon.

The winery is led by Valerio, a professional winemaker, and his father Franco, an expert vintner, with a handcrafted, family-oriented approach. Valerio personally oversees the agronomic management of the vineyards, carefully selecting the grapes and following every phase of winemaking, which takes place in the family’s historic farmstead, just a few steps away from the vines. Franco, with his extensive experience, is the guardian of winemaking traditions, dedicating himself with passion to working the vine.

Franco Mondo

The wines of the Franco Mondo winery are all D.O.C. and D.O.C.G., representing the excellence of Piedmontese viticulture. Among the most renowned labels are the Barbera d'Asti DOCG, Barbera d'Asti Superiore, and Nizza, a wine that perfectly embodies the synthesis between the Barbera grape and the land that nurtures it—an authentic expression of the Astigiano terroir.

Each bottle tells the story of a family that has always dedicated itself with love and care to viticulture, respecting the land and its fruits to create wines that narrate the history and beauty of Piedmont.

Piedmont

In Piedmont, the first traces of viticulture date back to pre-Roman times (precisely to the Bronze Age, around 1500 B.C.), and although today the peak of quality is found in the region's great red wines, Piedmont also produces excellent white wines and sparkling wines.

The role of Piedmont has been fundamental for the development of modern Italian winemaking. It is here that the first examples of zoning of wine-growing areas were recorded, introducing concepts such as terroir and cru to Italian wines. Thanks to zoning, if a wine is produced exclusively from grapes coming from a single vineyard or parcel, the geographical indication appears on the label, increasing its prestige.

In addition to the geographical delineations indicated on the map, Piedmont is divided into 8 zones that group the 16 DOCG and 42 regional DOCs. Among these, we remember in the north the famous Gattinara DOCG and Ghemme DOCG, near Turin the Erbaluce di Caluso DOCG, in Monferrato the Barbera del Monferrato Superiore DOCG, Brachetto d’Acqui DOCG, Dogliani DOCG, Ovada DOCG, Gavi DOCG, and Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato DOCG, ending with Roero DOCG to the left of the Tanaro river and, in the Langhe region, with the famous Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Dogliani DOCG.

In Piedmont, the revolution in the world of wine began, bringing Italy back to the forefront of high-quality production. Here, with few exceptions, single-varietal wines are produced, which best express the characteristics of the terroir and magnificently exalt the Piedmontese territory.

Monferrato

The Monferrato area is one of the most important wine regions worldwide, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Among these picturesque hills, Barbera is produced, a truly extraordinary, versatile, and fresh grape variety.

In Monferrato, vineyards almost entirely cover the hilltops and slopes, interspersed with small woods, in landscapes of great beauty. The wide diversity of soils allows for the production of very complex wines with a broad bouquet.

The soils are calcareous-marly, ranging in color from white to light gray or beige, rich in calcium carbonate. This allows for the production of full-bodied wines, rich in color (in reds), sometimes with a hint of tufa, suitable for aging. The red soils, on the other hand, are deeper and richer, containing clay, silt, iron oxides, and magnesium, and are excellent for producing white wines. The sandy soils of Asti produce excellent red wines characterized by low acidity and fast saturation.

Finally, on these soils, during very dry years, the vine may suffer from water stress because the higher percentage of sand does not allow the soil to retain water.

Monferrato, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, produces versatile and fresh Barbera in calcareous-marly soils, yielding complex and characteristic wines.
