NOTES BY OUR SOMMELIERS

👁 wine with a characteristic bright and transparent ruby colour;

👃🏻 on the nose it expresses great floral character (violet), typical of the grape variety, with pleasant fruity notes (raspberry, cherry, blackberry) and spicy notes,

👄 on the palate, the tannin is lively and well-integrated thanks to the nice softness, round, velvety and dry. It develops harmoniously on fruity hints, with a nice persistent finish.

FOOD PAIRINGS

Nebbiolo with a nice structure, able to be paired best with structured and flavoursome dishes, especially meat dishes, but also goes well with cheese boards and first courses. Try it with porcini mushroom or truffle risotto, rich soups and cheese fondue.

WINE-MAKING AND REFINEMENT

Tradition dictates that the organoleptic qualities of this vine can be expressed even after only one year of ageing. The name 'nebbiolo' seems to derive from the fact that it is harvested traditionally, when the first mists appear.

Grapes harvested by hand in mid-October, growing on clay and limestone soils from vines over 40 years old at an altitude of 300 metres, facing south and west. Arriving at the winery from the estate vineyards, it is softly pressed and fermented with temperature-controlled maceration for 10-12 days, with several daily pumpings over; it is aged for one year in oak barrels and six months in the bottle.

YOU WILL LOVE IT FOR...

its elegance.

ORIGIN

TERROIR

We are in the heart of the Langhe, a Unesco heritage site since 2014. It is a land of ancient wine-growing traditions, where wine was already known before the arrival of the Romans. The Empire brought great contributions to viticulture, including the deforestation of a large part of the Langhe, then covered by thick forest.

The Langhe are subdivided into Alta and Bassa Langa: the latter lies to the north between the Tanaro and Belbo rivers and is recognised the world over for prestigious wines such as Barolo and Barbaresco as well as Pelaverga, Dolcetto d'Alba and di Dogliani and Nebbiolo and Barbera.

The Alta Langa, on the other hand, is located further south and has steeper hills reaching up to 750 m; Alta Langa, Moscato and Barbera and the rare Timorasso are produced here. In particular, Alta Langa, thanks to the cultivation of chardonnay and pinot noir, has managed over the years to produce classic method and charmat sparkling wines that are renowned nationally and internationally. The soils of the Langhe are composed of clayey-calcareous sedimentary marls, interspersed with layers of more or less important grey-blue marls, an important characteristic for producing both full-bodied red wines and fresh, fragrant bubbles. The Langhe area is characterised by a temperate continental climate, with the peak of rainfall generally fixed during the month of May.

WINERY

Descendant of one of the historical winemaking families of the Langhe and Piedmont, Virna Borgogno graduated in Oenology, the first woman in Italy, in 1991; she then joined her father Lodovico in running the family winery.

Since the eighteenth century, the Borgogno family has dedicated itself to winemaking, although its modern history begins in the mid-twentieth century.

Today, the reins of the company are in the hands of Virna, accompanied by her sister Ivana.

The estate's vineyards extend over 12 hectares in the most prestigious areas, in some of Piedmont's most vocated crus: Cannubi, Sarmassa and Preda. From the small commune of Novello comes the Barolo base, made from grapes from the Merli and Sottocastello vineyards.

Always pursuing the highest possible quality levels, Virna's wines still maintain their traditional Langa roots, so they are the product of long ageing in large oak barrels for the base Barolo, while the two cru Cannubi and Sarmassa are aged in both large barrels and tonneaux. In addition to Barolo, the company also produces two Barbera d'Alba - whose cru San Giovanni comes from the municipality of Monforte -, some excellent Langhe DOC and a rosé wine from Nebbiolo. Thanks to this variety of terroir, the winery's wines all have different accents and characters in the common, excellent quality.

The secret of the winery's wines is Virna's unconditional love for her terroir.
