NOTES BY OUR SOMMELIERS

👁 of a beautiful deep ruby red;

👃🏻 on the nose, the aroma of dark red fruits (blueberries and blackberries), the finish is slightly peppery;

👄 on the palate it is medium-bodied, juicy, fleshy and fruity supported by very gentle tannins.

FOOD PAIRINGS

This pure Blaufränkisch is an intense, persistent red wine, and loves succulent food such as grilled meat or roast duck. For a vegan solution, it's excellent with stewed vegetables dressed and spices.

WINE-MAKING AND REFINEMENT

Grapes from three different vineyards have been selected to produce this elegant, round, fruity and fresh Blaufränkisch. The grapes were harvested by hand in 15 kg crates, fermented for 10 days on the skins before being pressed and subjected to malolactic fermentation in steel tanks. The wine was then aged in barrique barrels of 4 or 5 years and in large traditional 1500 l oval barrels for one year. The wine is neither filtered nor refined.

ORIGIN

TERROIR

We are in the Bela Krajina region, in the south east Slovenia. The quality of the terroir and the beauty of the surrounding landscape gives the area a unique terroir. The climate of Bela Krajina can be classified as sub-Apennine with sub-Mediterranean influences. While winters are generally cold and snowy, summers are characterized by warm days and cool nights. This important thermal excursion (up to 20° C) is a characteristic common to numerous high-level terroirs around the world that allows the grapes to reach optimal maturity while maintaining freshness. The total annual rainfall is around 1000-1100 mm. Since the vineyards in this area are planted vertically on steep marly slopes containing different proportions of clay and limestone, the availability of water for the vine is naturally well regulated.

WINERY

The winery is located near the town of Metlika, in southeastern Slovenia, in the smallest wine region of the country. The region is like an amphitheater open to the south, where the vineyards rise on the slopes of the Gorjanci mountains and see a plain of fields, woods and rivers further south. The landscape is typical karst, recognizable by the white birch trees and the fields of ferns in the plain, while the hilly slopes are occupied by vineyards. They work with a natural approach without chemical fertilizers and very little intervention in the cellar. As opposite to the general trend in Slovenia, their vineyards are mainly planted with red varieties (70%) of which Blaufränkisch represents 90%: this is because the continental climate makes the cultivation of black grapes perfect. A small "boutique" winery that creates its own wines from about ten hectares of vineyards.
