Production and refinement

Malvasia di Candia, cultivated using the spurred cordon method on predominantly clay soil, located in the marshy "Regone" area between the Po and Oglio rivers.
The harvest is carried out manually with great care to preserve the integrity of the grape clusters.

After a one-day maceration on the skins, the wine continues fermentation in steel tanks for six months. The sparkling process follows the ancestral method: re-fermentation in the bottle using must from the same harvest. The wine rests on the lees until it is ready for sale, ensuring aromatic complexity and natural effervescence.

Caleffi

Caleffi is the only winery in the province of Cremona.

Located in Spineda, on the border between the provinces of Cremona and Mantua, it is managed by brothers Davide and Emanuele, who cultivate the historic family vineyard that has been passed down through generations.

The winery is dedicated to producing high-quality wine, respecting the vine and the natural winemaking times, reviving the ancestral method of bottle fermentation with a completely natural approach in both the vineyard and the winery, resulting in products of the highest quality.

Caleffi

Their vineyard is located in an area of marshy origin between the Po and Oglio rivers, known as “Regone.” The determination of farmers transformed it from thorny, overgrown land—hence the name Spineda—into a terrain suitable for viticulture, characterized by predominantly clay soils.

Production is meticulous and extremely limited, coming from just two and a half hectares. In the rows, work focuses on preserving the ecosystem, with minimal intervention limited to targeted pruning until harvest. The same care continues in the winery, where the brothers have earned a respected position in Lombard wine production and beyond.

Lombardy

The first evidence of vine cultivation in Lombardy dates back to prehistoric settlements on the lakes of Garda and Iseo, but it is only in contemporary times - post-phylloxera - that the focus has been on quality, also thanks to the introduction of American vine rootstocks. Thanks to the diversity of terroirs, viticulture here has given rise to a prominent ampelographic landscape, with a multitude of native grape varieties and wines that are a pride not only for the peninsula but also abroad (first and foremost Franciacorta DOCG, appreciated worldwide).

Lombardy is very extensive, therefore it presents areas with different characteristics both in terms of climate and soil. There are decidedly mountainous areas, as well as flat or partially hilly areas.
The main production areas are concentrated in the southern foothills, with the Garda area (with its unique microclimate thanks to the influence of the lakes), Oltrepò Pavese to the west, Brescia and Bergamo in the central part of the region, and Valtellina on the border with Austria.

In the region, wines of all types are produced, and there are five DOCG regions: Franciacorta in Brescia, Oltrepò Pavese Metodo Classico in the province of Pavia, Moscato di Scanzo in Bergamo (the smallest denomination in Italy), and Sforzato di Valtellina and Valtellina Superiore in the province of Sondrio.

Mantova and Cremona

The discovery of Vitis vinifera seeds near Lake Garda, dating back to the Bronze Age (2,000 years before Roman civilization), highlights the deep roots of Lombardy's winemaking culture. Over time, through evolution, transformation, and overcoming various phases of growth and decline, Lombardy's winemaking journey has led to the establishment of vineyards in the region's most suitable areas.

In the province of Mantua, the land dedicated to viticulture is highly diverse, encompassing two distinct wine-growing areas: the hilly region and the Oltrepò Mantovano. The hilly area, renowned for both still wines and sparkling and dessert wines, features grape varieties such as Chardonnay, Cabernet, Merlot, and Pinot Grigio, under the Garda DOC and Garda Colli Mantovani DOC designations. Another important designation in Mantua's province is the Lambrusco Mantovano DOC, with two distinct production subzones: Lambrusco Viadanese, known for fuller-bodied and robust wines, and Lambrusco dell’Oltrepò Mantovano, offering lighter and more aromatic wines.

In the Cremona area, currently, only one winery is active.

The first Vitis vinifera seeds in Lombardy date back to the Bronze Age.
