NOTES BY OUR SOMMELIERS
👁 a beautiful intense ruby red, with purple reflections;
👃🏻 on the nose it expresses a fine bouquet, including plum, black cherry, berries but also more complex spices notes;
👄 on the palate it is rich, warm and full-bodied, with important tannins and a savory and persistent finish. Very pleasant.
This Aglianico is intense, persistent, with a tannin that makes it very pleasant to drink: it is particularly suitable in combination with meat main courses. Perfect with tagliatelle with beef ragout, excellent with braised meats, game.
WINE-MAKING AND REFINEMENT
In the heart of Calabria, from 6 hectares of vineyards cultivated with extreme care and respect for the territory, a unique wine comes to life, expression of two native vines grown in the locality of Carmine, Scarrozza and Gunì at an altitude of 300 meters above sea level on calcareous soils. Grapes harvested by hand, de-stemmed and softly pressed and subsequently fermented only with yeasts naturally present on the grapes, the contact with the skins is 15 days. Short aging in wood.
YOU'LL LOVE IT FOR…
Calabria is one of the least known territories in Italy, but it has potential that intrigue even the most experienced palates.The company is located in the Verzano district, a hamlet of Donnici Inferiore, in the province of Cosenza.
The climate in the area is influenced by the geographical conformation that sees it located in a valley surrounded by mountain ranges, such as the Pollino and the Sila, which block the ventilation from the sea; this results in high temperatures in the summer and very cold in the winter months.
In the province there are two of the nine DOCs of Calabria The Savuto DOC (shared with the province of Catanzaro). He is dedicated to wines produced with the grapes of the Montonico, Chardonnay, Greco Bianco, Malvasia Bianca, Gaglioppo, Aglianico, Greco Nero and Nerello Capp varieties, vinified in the white, red and rosé.
The Terre di Cosenza DOC is more recent and dates back to 2011, born by merging pre-existing denominations. Seven sub-zones: Colline del Crati, Condoleo, Donnici, Esaro, Pollino, San Vito di Luzzi and Verbicaro. Its wines are produced from grapes of the Magliocco canino, Greco nero, Gaglioppo, Aglianico, Calabrese, Greco bianco, Guernaccia bianca, Pecorello, Malvasia bianca, Montonico, Chardonnay, Cabernet sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese vines. The disciplinary provides for the types of red, including reserve, passito, late harvest, new, rosé, also sparkling, white, even sparkling, as well as those specific to the single grape varieties vinified in purity. In the province of Cosenza there is also the regional denomination Cosenza IGT.
Antonino Altomonte created his winery in the heart of Calabria, in the hills a few kilometers from the Ionian Sea. Altomonte is a small winery, attentive to the history and tradition of Calabria. The desire to enhance the native vineyards is an integral part of the winery's philosophy.
A real gem set in one of the most beautiful areas of the region. Respect for the environment is the beacon that guides choices in the vineyard. Knowledge and rigor instead dictate the rules in the cellar. Altomonte thus produces unique, authentic labels with great personality.
