Ferraton Père & Fils

Ferraton Père & Fils is a winery with a long and rich history, deeply connected to the Hermitage vineyard. Located in the Rhône Valley, home to the Syrah, Marsanne, and Roussanne grape varieties, the history of Ferraton Père & Fils is also one of choice and necessity: biodynamics.

The story of Ferraton Père & Fils begins in 1946, on this sunny land of the Rhône Valley, with Jean Orëns Ferraton. His son Michel inherited the same passion and decided to expand his father's vineyards. Thus, the first Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, and Saint-Joseph Ferraton wines were born. A close family friend, Michel Chapoutier, brought his expertise, and in 1998 the vineyards were converted to organic viticulture, then certified, and subsequently embraced biodynamics, a bold step towards innovative and strong perspectives.

Rhône Valley

Forests of oak trees, terraced vineyards with steep pathways on friable granite soils, pebbly and sunny plains where vines mingle with olive trees, set the backdrop to the course of the Rhône, whose banks are dotted with precious vineyards, already known to the Greeks and Romans.

The Rhône Valley is located in southeastern France, from the city of Lyon to the region of Provence. The area experienced a certain decline in the 20th century, but since the 1980s, it has rediscovered the production of quality wines. The production of the Rhône Valley mainly focuses on black grape varieties: Syrah and Grenache above all.

It was probably the Greeks who began vine cultivation along the Rhône after settling on the Mediterranean coasts and traveling upstream along the river. However, it was the Romans who, after the foundation of the city of Vienne between 120 and 100 BC, planted the first vineyards on the terraces of the Hermitage hill and began the production of "vinum picatum" (described by the Roman historian Pliny the Elder), a wine made from a grape called Allobrogica and vinified in wooden barrels.

Today, the Rhône Valley is one of the most important French wine regions and over the years has carved out its space in the global wine scene.

The Rhône Valley is divided into two major areas: Northern Rhône and Southern Rhône. The Northern Rhône Valley includes these main appellations: Côte-Rôtie, Condrieu and Château-Grillet, Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, Saint-Joseph, Cornas, and Saint-Pèray. The Southern Rhône Valley includes these main appellations: Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Tavel, and Lirac, Muscat de Baumes-de-Venise, and Rasteau.

Hermitage

The Rhône Valley is home to important AOC (Appellation d'Origine Contrôlée) designations. The main appellations in the northern area include Hermitage, Crozes-Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, Cornas, St.-Joseph, Condrieu, and Château-Grillet. In the southern area, notable designations include Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Gigondas, Vacqueyras, Côtes-du-Rhône, Côtes-du-Rhône-Villages, Beaumes-de-Venise, and Tavel.

Hermitage, one of the most prestigious appellations of the Northern Rhône Valley, is renowned for its red wines produced with the Syrah grape variety. The finest vineyards of Hermitage are located on south-facing hills, ensuring excellent grape ripening. Hermitage red wines can include up to 15% of white Marsanne and Roussanne grapes, which add complexity and structure. With the same grapes, Hermitage Blanc is also produced, where Marsanne provides structure and Roussanne elegance.

The Crozes-Hermitage area, adjacent to Hermitage, receives less sunlight exposure but produces wines of similar types, although generally considered less prestigious.

One of the most prestigious appellations of the Northern Rhône Valley, renowned for its red wines produced with Syrah.
