Production and refinement

In the heart of Sicily, from a single pre-phylloxera cru that preserves an ancestral genetic heritage, Nero d’Avola Vrucara is born. It is the signature wine of Feudo Montoni, crafted from grapes grown on ancient bush-trained vines of extraordinary longevity, cultivated at 500 meters above sea level on clay-sandy soils with eastern exposure. 100% Nero d’Avola, hand-harvested into small crates.

Spontaneous fermentation with indigenous yeasts takes place in cement tanks, followed by a long maceration on the skins (30 days) with manual punch-downs and pressing using an old wooden press.
The wine is aged for 45 months in cement, then 6 months in large oak casks, and an additional 6 months in bottle, in harmony with the natural rhythm of time and the seasons. No forced stabilization is applied—only gravity-driven decanting and the natural cold of winter.

Organoleptic analysis

Visual exam

A dense and luminous ruby red.

Olfactory examination

On the nose, it is intense and layered: red plum, small black berries, rose petals, with balsamic nuances of liquorice, eucalyptus, resin, and elegant oriental spices. After all, the name “Vrucara” recalls the aromatic shrub — the *vruca* — that grows spontaneously around the vineyards, imbuing them with balsamic and resinous notes.

Tasting

On the palate, it is broad and velvety, with a significant structure balanced by well-defined freshness and savoriness. The tannins are soft and well-integrated, with a long, consistent finish marked by deep aromatic elegance.

Feudo Montoni

Feudo Montoni is a place suspended in time, nestled in the heart of inland Sicily, between the hills of the Agrigento hinterland and the mountainous profiles of the Cammarata area. The estate is located at an altitude of about 500 meters, on a ventilated plateau that gazes at the sea from afar and benefits from a unique microclimate. Here, the intense light, temperature fluctuations, and ancient soils impart tension and finesse to the wines.

The origins of the estate date back to 1469, when the noble Aragonese family Abatellis established it as an agricultural outpost of excellence. The current owner, Fabio Sireci, a third-generation member of his family at the helm of the estate, has chosen to preserve and pass down this winemaking heritage by focusing entirely on indigenous identity. His viticulture is one of cultural resistance: no shortcuts, outside the trends, deeply rooted in the land and memory.

The heart of production is represented by historic Sicilian varieties – Nero d’Avola, Perricone, Catarratto, Inzolia – all grown exclusively within the estate’s boundaries. Among these vineyards stands the famous Vrucara, a single plot of pre-phylloxera, own-rooted Nero d’Avola, cultivated in the traditional alberello system on clay and sandy soils. It is considered one of the most authentic and profound expressions of the variety, recognized internationally as one of the great reds of the Mediterranean.

Feudo Montoni

The production philosophy of Feudo Montoni is based on organic practices (certified since 2013), spontaneous fermentations, the use of cement and large oak barrels, and minimal intervention both in the vineyard and the winery. The goal is not power, but the truth of the wine: each label is designed as a liquid story of the vineyard from which it comes.

Around the vineyard, Fabio Sireci preserves biodiversity through the maintenance of forests, olive groves, fruit trees, and vegetable gardens. Montoni is, first and foremost, a living ecosystem, where Sicilian agricultural culture blends with a contemporary idea of sustainability and elegance.

Region and territory

Sicily

Sicilian wine territory is now considered a true continent, thanks to its pedoclimatic variability and rich biodiversity. It is located in the center of the Mediterranean and in the so-called "northern sunbelt," an area between the 30th and 50th parallels north and the 30th and 40th parallels south, where the best conditions of brightness and temperature for vine cultivation are found.

On the smaller islands, given the high temperatures and windy conditions, the typical training system is the "alberello" and its "mixed" versions (for example, on the island of Pantelleria), as well as the "Tendone" system. In the rest of Sicilian territory, however, more than half of the vineyards use espaliers and contre-espaliers. In Sicily, wines with a long history are born, such as Marsala, but also fragrant dessert wines like Passito di Pantelleria and Malvasia delle Lipari, not to mention Moscato di Noto and numerous robust red wines and interesting white wines. There's also Nerello Mascalese, climbing the slopes of Mount Etna.

Agrigento

The province of Agrigento boasts 6 DOC denominations out of the 23 on the island, reflecting the richness and variety of its winegrowing territory.

Among these, the Contea di Scalfani DOC – shared with Palermo and Caltanissetta – produces red, rosé, and white wines, while the Menfi DOC, located on the southern coast and shared with Trapani, offers both white varieties (Chardonnay, Grecanico, Inzolia) and red varieties (Nero d’Avola, Sangiovese, Syrah, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot), including sweet wines made from late harvests.

The Sambuca di Sicilia DOC, established in 1995 and located in the hinterland of Sciacca, includes a range of wines that are not related to the eponymous liqueur. The Santa Margherita di Belice DOC, named after the town and the Belice River, produces white wines from varieties like Inzolia, Catarratto, and Grecanico, and red wines based on Nero d’Avola, Sangiovese, and Cabernet Sauvignon, without Novello or Riserva variants for the reds.

The Sciacca DOC, located on the south-western coast between Agrigento and Marsala, produces red, rosé, and white wines that can be labeled “Riserva” if aged for at least 24 months, including the Rayana Riserva type for whites from the Rayana subzone. Finally, the Sicilia DOC, established in 2011 and derived from the Sicilia IGT (now Terre Siciliane IGT), promotes the island's native grape varieties.

The province stands out for its oenological richness, which is expressed through denominations that celebrate the diversity and quality of Sicilian wines.

Recommended pairings and dishes

Matching by concordance

It stands out for its intense aromas, which call for pairings by analogy with dishes featuring long aromatic persistence—such as game with a red fruit or sweet spice reduction, sliced beef with pink peppercorns and thyme, or Sicilian couscous with dried fruit and spices.

Matching by contrast

With its velvety structure, ripe tannins, and balsamic notes, it pairs wonderfully with rich and succulent dishes, where the intensity and fat are balanced by the wine's freshness. Some examples include: braised or slow-cooked meats in wine reduction, roast lamb with Mediterranean herbs, and aged and spicy cheeses (mature pecorinos, caciocavallo).

It pairs well with

Grilled red meats, game, rich roasts, aged cheeses, and fine cured meats.

Lamb

Lamb, whether roasted or baked, is a rich and flavorful main course, with intense taste and aromas. Perfect with potatoes for important lunches.

Grilled Meat

Skewers, pork, steaks, up to the noble Florentine steak... grilling enhances the flavor of the meat (properly marinated) and makes it pleasantly charred. Best enjoyed in company for truly convivial barbecues, always being careful not to place the meat directly over the flame.
