Production and refinement

The wine is made from equal parts Trebbiano and Malvasia, from vines planted in 1970 on clay and limestone soils with slight sandy percentages that impart freshness and minerality. At an altitude of 380 meters, the vines are trained using the double guyot method with very low yields (30 hl/ha). The manual harvest takes place in two phases (September 2nd and 27th) to enhance the different aromatic and acidic nuances of the grapes.

Fermentation is spontaneous, using indigenous yeasts, on the skins, in stainless steel tanks and ceramic amphorae. Maceration is carefully adjusted each year to maintain balance and structure. This is followed by an aging period of 10 months, including 4 months in the bottle. Production is limited to about 2,700 bottles per year.

Pietro 17

Pietro 17 is a small family-run farm born from the shared dream of Laura and Alexander: to create authentic wines that reflect the Marche region and their vision of harmony between nature, tradition, and innovation. Located in Staffolo, in the heart of the Castelli di Jesi, the estate cultivates its grapes organically, carefully overseeing every phase of the process, from the vineyard to the bottle.

The vineyards, planted in 1970, are managed as a living organism: old vines of Trebbiano, Malvasia, and Verdicchio grow on clay-limestone soils at 375 meters above sea level.

Pietro 17

The winery’s approach is artisanal, with utmost respect for the environment and deliberately limited production: each wine is crafted to best express the identity of its individual vineyard plot.

Pietro 17 is more than just a winery: it is the story of a family that has chosen to live wine as an act of love, sharing it with those who seek authenticity in every glass.

Marche

Viticulture in the Marche has ancient roots dating back to Etruscan times, and over the centuries, it has become an important activity for the local economy, with medieval expansion of cultivation thanks to the Benedictine monks.
The fame of Marche wines spread throughout Europe in the 19th century, only to suffer a crisis due to competition from wines of other Italian regions. It regained prominence only in recent decades, thanks to the rediscovery of native varieties and the introduction of new cultivation and winemaking techniques.

Thanks to its pedoclimatic characteristics, the Marche is particularly suited to viticulture, although the climate varies greatly depending on the arrangement and altitude of the relief. In coastal and southern areas, the climate is Mediterranean, warmer and drier, while in the inland and northern areas, it is continental, with greater temperature variations and the risk of frost.
Soils also vary depending on the subzone: three types of soils can be identified – calcareous soils in the hilly areas, clayey soils in the flat valleys, and sandy soils in the coastal strip.

Ancona coast

The climate in this region varies from sub-continental in the north of Ancona to Mediterranean in the south. The majestic Monte Conero rises here, significantly influencing the microclimate of the vineyards that lie on its southeastern slopes, where the soil is rich in limestone and potassium.

In the province of Ancona, three of the five DOCG wines of the Marche region can be found, showcasing the region's rich winemaking tradition. The Conero DOCG, made from Montepulciano and Sangiovese grapes, is particularly ancient and has been highly regarded since the time of Pliny the Elder. The Rosso Conero DOC, a derivative of the Conero DOCG, also uses Montepulciano grapes.

Verdicchio is the foundation of the Castello di Jesi Verdicchio Riserva DOCG and Verdicchio di Matelica Riserva DOCG, both shared with the province of Macerata. These grapes are also used in the Verdicchio dei Castelli di Jesi DOC and Verdicchio di Matelica DOC denominations.

Ancona is also home to seven regional DOCs, including Lacrima di Morro d’Alba DOC, a red wine made from the ancient native Lacrima grape. Esino DOC and Colli Maceratesi DOC, both shared with Macerata, include various grape varieties and produce white, red, and sparkling wines. The Rosso Piceno DOC, covering a wide area of the Marche, is primarily made from Montepulciano and Sangiovese.

Finally, the Marche IGT denomination encompasses all types of wine produced in the region using authorized grape varieties.
