Production and refinement

100% Grillo grown on espalier in the “Trazzera Marraffa” vineyard, over 800 meters above sea level in the heart of the Alte Madonie. The soil is medium-textured, tending towards clay, and rich in minerals. Yield is limited (80 quintals/ha) and the harvest is done manually in crates at the end of August. Vineyard management follows the principles of organic farming with a biodynamic approach.

Fermentation in stainless steel at controlled temperature, followed by aging on fine lees in stainless steel tanks for 6-8 months, to preserve the varietal freshness and gustatory verticality.

Organoleptic analysis

Visual exam

Bright straw yellow, with subtle greenish highlights that speak of its youth and freshness.

Olfactory examination

Intense and refined. Floral notes of jasmine and orange blossom, herbal hints of nettle and green pepper, with citrus and fruity nuances reminiscent of lemon zest and Williams pear.

Tasting

Vibrant, marked by bright acidity and pronounced savoriness. The palate is fresh and harmonious, with a dry finish consistent with the aromatic profile, where notes of aromatic herbs and a hint of brininess return. Long, exceptionally elegant finish.

Tenuta San Giaime

Legend has it that in the Middle Ages, pilgrims traveling to Santiago de Compostela from the Middle East crossed Sicily through the territory of San Giaime, bringing with them a vine originally from Persia: Syrah. From this passage, blending history and myth, a winemaking tradition was born and passed down through generations, eventually reaching the Cicco family. Today, Alessio, the third generation, passionately leads Tenuta San Giaime, continuing a dream born in the early 2000s with the desire to restore the family vineyards.

We are in Gangi, in the heart of the Alte Madonie, in the province of Palermo. A stunning mountainous landscape at about one thousand meters above sea level, suspended between the profile of Mount Etna to the east and the glow of the Mediterranean to the north. Here, high-altitude wines are born in a unique climatic and pedological context: optimal exposures, strong temperature variations, medium-textured soils tending towards clay and rich in organic matter. A rare terroir, particularly suited to producing concentrated, healthy, and authentic grapes.

The varieties grown — all following the principles of organic farming — are those that express Sicily’s identity and openness: alongside Syrah and Grillo, there are Nerello Mascalese, Carricante, Perricone, Zibibbo, and even Pinot Noir. The vineyard approach is respectful and mindful: beyond viticulture, the estate preserves olive groves and fields dedicated to ancient Sicilian grains, contributing to the conservation of landscape and biodiversity.

Tenuta San Giaime

In the winery, winemaking is carried out naturally, with spontaneous fermentations triggered only by native yeasts. No chemicals, no additives. Aging takes place in cement tanks and oak barriques, always with the goal of enhancing the purity of the fruit and the character of the terroir.

With only 7 hectares under vine, Tenuta San Giaime is a small estate that focuses entirely on quality, identity, and emotion. The labels produced are few, but each holds a piece of history, a landscape, and a clear vision. Wines that unite roots and future, tradition and experimentation, craftsmanship and a drive for excellence.

Sicily

Sicilian wine territory is now considered a true continent, thanks to its pedoclimatic variability and rich biodiversity. It is located in the center of the Mediterranean and in the so-called "northern sunbelt," an area between the 30th and 50th parallels north and the 30th and 40th parallels south, where the best conditions of brightness and temperature for vine cultivation are found.

On the smaller islands, given the high temperatures and windy conditions, the typical training system is the "alberello" and its "mixed" versions (for example, on the island of Pantelleria), as well as the "Tendone" system. In the rest of Sicilian territory, however, more than half of the vineyards use espaliers and contre-espaliers. In Sicily, wines with a long history are born, such as Marsala, but also fragrant dessert wines like Passito di Pantelleria and Malvasia delle Lipari, not to mention Moscato di Noto and numerous robust red wines and interesting white wines. There's also Nerello Mascalese, climbing the slopes of Mount Etna.

Palermo

Among the main denominations of the Palermo area, stand out the Denominazione di Origine Controllata (DOC) Alcamo and the DOC Contea di Sclafani. The Alcamo DOC extends over an area of over 1,000 hectares of vineyards, characterized by clayey and calcareous soils. This denomination is renowned for its dry white wines, particularly those produced with the Catarratto grape variety, which represents a significant percentage of cultivated grapes. The Contea di Sclafani DOC embraces about 650 hectares of vineyards, with a diversity of altitudes ranging from 300 to 900 meters above sea level.

Among the native varieties: Grillo, Inzolia, and Grecanico for whites, and Nerello Mascalese, Perricone, and Nerello Cappuccio for reds. Experimentations with international grape varieties, combined with sustainable agricultural practices, contribute to creating a dynamic and ever-evolving wine scene in the Palermo region. Exploring the vineyards of Palermo offers a fascinating overview of unique terroirs, traditional grape varieties, and innovative production techniques that characterize this rich Sicilian wine heritage.

Exploring the vineyards of Palermo means immersing oneself in a fascinating world of distinctive terroirs and centuries-old winemaking traditions.
