Sociale di Gattinara

Founded in 1908, the Cantina Sociale di Gattinara is one of the oldest wine cooperatives in Italy. Its establishment marked a pioneering step for the time: it was only the third social winery to be created in the country. In an era when agricultural individualism was the norm, the decision to join forces was both revolutionary and forward-thinking.

Over the course of more than a century, the winery has faced the historical challenges and economic tensions of the 20th century: two world wars, shifting markets, and the cyclical crises of Piedmontese viticulture. Its resilience has always been sustained by the strength of its community and a vision grounded in deep-rooted values: passion for the land, respect for tradition, and shared knowledge.

Sociale di Gattinara

Today, the winery includes around 40 members and 15 hectares of vineyards, all managed with artisanal care. In the hilly area of the Vercelli province—historic cradle of Nebbiolo—the vineyards rest on ancient, mineral-rich soils, giving rise to wines of great personality that balance structure and elegance.

Far from the spotlight of fleeting trends, the Cantina has always embraced an authentic vision of wine, blending time-honored experience with discreet innovation. Here, in the heart of the Terre del Nebbiolo, are born long-lived, refined, and harmonious wines—deeply rooted in the region’s gastronomic culture and proud ambassadors of Gattinara to the world.

Piedmont

In Piedmont, the first traces of viticulture date back to pre-Roman times (precisely to the Bronze Age, around 1500 B.C.), and although today the peak of quality is found in the region's great red wines, Piedmont also produces excellent white wines and sparkling wines.

The role of Piedmont has been fundamental for the development of modern Italian winemaking. It is here that the first examples of zoning of wine-growing areas were recorded, introducing concepts such as terroir and cru to Italian wines. Thanks to zoning, if a wine is produced exclusively from grapes coming from a single vineyard or parcel, the geographical indication appears on the label, increasing its prestige.

In addition to the geographical delineations indicated on the map, Piedmont is divided into 8 zones that group the 16 DOCG and 42 regional DOCs. Among these, we remember in the north the famous Gattinara DOCG and Ghemme DOCG, near Turin the Erbaluce di Caluso DOCG, in Monferrato the Barbera del Monferrato Superiore DOCG, Brachetto d’Acqui DOCG, Dogliani DOCG, Ovada DOCG, Gavi DOCG, and Ruchè di Castagnole Monferrato DOCG, ending with Roero DOCG to the left of the Tanaro river and, in the Langhe region, with the famous Barolo DOCG, Barbaresco DOCG, and Dogliani DOCG.

In Piedmont, the revolution in the world of wine began, bringing Italy back to the forefront of high-quality production. Here, with few exceptions, single-varietal wines are produced, which best express the characteristics of the terroir and magnificently exalt the Piedmontese territory.

Gattinara

Gattinara is in the province of Vercelli, a small town at the heart of the eponymous wine region in the territory of Alto Piemonte, at the foot of Monte Rosa. An extraordinary place with a unique terroir, extremely well-suited to producing Nebbiolos of great complexity, elegance, and freshness. One of Italy's oldest origin denominations, Gattinara received DOC recognition in 1967 and became DOCG in 1990.

The microclimate of Gattinara is what makes this territory unique and perfect for viticulture. The natural position of the hills, located at the foot of Monte Rosa, allows for an exposure from Southeast to Southwest, with the imposing Alps acting as a protective barrier from the colder currents blowing from the North. The Alpine influence ensures a gentle breeze that blows delicately at any time of the day, contributing to the elegance that characterizes the wines of the region.

The soil has volcanic origins, a unique condition for Nebbiolo. The lapilli and volcanic remnants are mainly composed of silica, iron, magnesium, porphyry, and granite, all elements that enhance the minerality of the wine, imparting mineral notes, sapidity, persistent and pleasant freshness, characteristics that make Gattinara wines elegant, persistent, and full of flavor.

Its unique microclimate, protected by the Alps, and the volcanic soil rich in minerals contribute to creating wines characterized by minerality, sapidity, and persistent freshness, making them elegant and full of flavor.

Recommended pairings and dishes

Matching by concordance

Nebbiolo that pairs beautifully with complex, rich dishes, in harmony with the wine’s own complexity. Perfect with ingredients that offer long-lasting flavor development—such as game, spices, and slow-cooked preparations—thanks to its aromatic intensity. Finally, the finesse of this Gattinara is well reflected in equally refined dishes, ideally from Piedmontese cuisine (e.g. braised meats or finanziera).

It pairs well with

Roasted or grilled red meat, game (wild boar, pheasant, venison), aged cheeses (e.g. Castelmagno, Bitto, 36-month Parmigiano), and rich traditional Piedmontese first courses.
