Production and refinement

From a 4-hectare vineyard in Calabria, on the Costa Viola, with southern and south-western exposure and an altitude reaching up to 300 meters above sea level; the land is terraced with dry-stone walls. Indigenous grape varieties—Prunesta, Malvasia Nera, Nerello Calabrese, Gaglioppo, and Patriniro—are trained using the espalier, pergola, and bush vine methods. Harvest is carried out by hand with grape selection in the vineyard, between late September and early October.

Traditional red vinification at controlled temperature. Aged for 3 months in large chestnut barrels, which impart soft tannins and a balanced structure.

Enopolis Costa Viola e Crisera'

Enopolis Costa Viola is a cooperative founded in 2006 with the goal of protecting, enhancing, and promoting the products of the Armacìe — the characteristic dry-stone terraced vineyards stretching for about 20 kilometers along the Calabrian Costa Viola. In this unique landscape, heroic, precious, and fragile viticulture is practiced, producing wines that are an authentic expression of the territory and a symbol of collaboration and community.

Alongside this reality stands the historic Casa Vinicola Criserà, founded at the end of the 19th century. For four generations, the Criserà family has carried forward a legacy built on love for their land, dedication to the vineyard, and passion for fine wine. Deeply rooted in the most authentic values of Calabrian culture, the company is now expanding and offers on the market a range of IGT wines with a strong personality, capable of combining structure, finesse, and elegance.

With a constant focus on authenticity and the enhancement of native grape varieties, Criserà combines tradition and innovation: it employs the most modern winemaking technologies to ensure high quality standards and to competitively face the challenges of the global market. The result is a production appreciated both nationally and internationally, awarded by the leading wine and food guides.

Cantine Criserà’s philosophy is based on a direct relationship with the customer: whether Italian or foreign, every guest is always warmly welcomed at the company’s facilities to discover and taste a wide selection of wines that, in every glass, tell the story and strength of the Calabrian land.

Calabria

Calabria is a region rich in history and cultural traditions, and although the Calabrian vineyard represents less than 2% of the national total, thanks to the qualitative push of the producers and a savvy marketing action, the heritage of native grape varieties is receiving the right attention. Starting from the Greeks, who named Calabria "Enotria" (land of wine), for many years the region provided only bulk wines to Italian and foreign producers, which lent themselves well thanks to their intense color and high alcohol content. The situation has now changed, and the tenacity of Calabrian winemakers has led to the establishment of productive realities and wines of considerable quality in the region.

The Calabrian vineyard stretches across rugged and challenging terrain characterized by narrow valleys drawn by rivers and mountains. The morphology between the Ionian and Tyrrhenian slopes is different, but the climatic conditions are substantially the same, characterized by a Mediterranean climate, with temperatures ranging from 10°C in winter to 40°C in summer. The Cosentino area, located in the north, bordering Basilicata, is the largest production area, and it is joined by Lametino (in the area of Lamezia Terme), the southern Ionian area, also known as Locride, and the Crotonese area with the subzone of Cirotano.

Reggio Calabria

The province of Reggio Calabria is located in the southernmost part of the region, south of the Strait of Catanzaro — the narrowest point of the entire Italian peninsula. Here, a narrow valley about 30 km long connects the two coasts, the Ionian and the Tyrrhenian, creating a clear geographical and climatic distinction.

The area is deeply influenced by the tectonic structures typical of the Central Mediterranean geological context, featuring a complex arrangement of mountains and valleys. Soils vary significantly between the two slopes: along the Tyrrhenian coast and the slopes of the Apennines, limestone terraces overlay volcanic layers, producing intense and structured wines, often based on Magliocco, characterized by powerful tannins and a strong aging potential.

In contrast, the hills on the Ionian side have clay-limestone formations ideal for cultivating Gaglioppo. Here, red wines emerge that are less intensely colored but offer great finesse, sapidity, and a marked mineral imprint.

Most of the province’s wine production falls under various Indicazioni Geografiche Tipiche (IGTs): Costa Viola IGT, Palizzi IGT, Pellaro IGT, Locride IGT, Arghillà IGT, and Scilla IGT — all named after the territories surrounding the slopes of the Aspromonte, both on the Tyrrhenian and Ionian sides. These wines tell the story of a complex and rich land, where viticulture intertwines with the unique features of a singular landscape and a millenary history.
